Effluvium

I was reading a book (an ebook actually) the other day and I came across this word: effluvium. I had a sort of an idea what it meant but I had to look it up to be sure. It is a noun: an invisible emanation, esp. an offensive exhalation,... and I thought, "AH-HA!"

What better way to describe the rambling and sometimes somewhat foul internal dialogue that occasionally effuses forth into prose upon these very pages. Effluuuuvium!

The book was "Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers" by Mary Roach and it was fascinating. She has a way, as it were, with the delicate turn of phrase in describing human remains. I highly recommend the book.
